The most important functions of the NIR
Near-infrared (NIR) light therapy is based on the premise that long-wavelength light stimulates cellular energy metabolism and production. Infrared energy is invisible but penetrates deep into the body’s soft tissues, muscles, joints, and bones. Three key photoreceptor molecules absorb light in the NIR range: hemoglobin, myoglobin, and cytochrome c oxidase. Of these, cytochrome c oxidase is the most important mechanism of photobiomodulation (or low-level laser therapy, LLLT).
